"That song lyrics should not have content disrespectful to women or human life."

Did your child grow up in the ghettos and face persecution every day of his life? Many people believe that rap music contains lyrics that are too offensive.  What they don’t take into consideration are the people who make the music and the lives that they have lived. They have three things that are in their favour, the freedom of speech, the fact that many people buy their music and that they’re just telling you their story. So sit back and listen to why rap should be how it is.

The world has said that everyone has the freedom of speech and the right to voice their opinion to the world, however harsh it may be people have a right to be heard. So what better way to voice your opinion to the world than using music? Rappers have been speaking to the world for many years now, giving their view on what the harsh reality of our world is. Some of the language they use may not be the most pleasant but it gives a clear description of what life has been like for them. I find it hard to understand how people think rap is offensive as it proves to be the harsh reality, which some people are forced to live in and which others do their best to ignore. With people complaining about the lyrical content of rap, it leaves me wondering whether we do have the freedom of speech.

Rap is one of the most popular genres of music in the world today, selling millions of albums each year. To me these numbers speak in volumes as they show how many people are not offended by the lyrical content of the music. They say that rap corrupts the mind, but we still buy it and I’m sure you will agree that we don’t all have corrupted minds. I believe that if there is a market for rap then we have the right to give the people what they want and how they want it. Rap can’t be toned down. After all wouldn’t you feel ripped off if you asked for an orange juice and all you got was the watered down version?

If you asked someone how there life had been growing up and they had lied to you because they thought you might take it the wrong way or get offended, you wouldn’t be happy with them would you? In the same way when rappers are trying to tell you about their life experiences and they don’t use some of that “offensive” language, they won’t be able to show you what they’ve been through. 50CENT once said “….if I asked you to paint the American flag without using the colour red, you wouldn’t be able to do it….”. Rap music is the same, without using the “offensive” words they can’t tell you their story in a way that is true to life.

Rap music has opened my eyes to all the troubles the world has, but this is good. People have the right to know. These rappers have lived lives harder than I could ever imagine and I think that the least we can do is let them tell us about it. The way they tell us might not be glamorous, but it is a true reflection on what they have been through. Anyway, if you don’t like what you hear, just don’t listen to it.
