RUN LOLA RUN

In the film Run Lola Run Tom Tykwer uses four techniques to make Lola memorable. These four techniques are tracking, music, colour and film quality.

A memorable character in the film, Run Lola Run, is Lola. This is because of her great love for Manni. The director Tom Tykwer has used the camera technique of tracking to emphasise how Lola is strong and determined. Because the camera is always following Lola, we see how strong willed and loyal she is to the love of her life, Manni. The tracking which is constantly following Lola shows loving, brave and impulsive she is. I believe that the tracking used in this film shows how loving Lola is and that is very important as this film revolves around the love Lola has for Manni.

Another feature used to make Lola memorable is the music. The music used is a fast and lively techno beat. This music creates tension and is used only when Lola is running, this shows how important it is that Lola keeps running. The fast upbeat techno music matches Lola’s personality which is feisty and rebellious. I think the music is used to great affect as it keeps you watching to see what Lola, the fast, unpredictable and daring character will do next.

A third technique that is used to make Lola memorable is colour. Colour plays a big part in Run Lola Run and the colour red is especially important. The colour red is important because it is different and it stands out, Lola’s red hair is very hard to miss. Red is also thought of as a fast colour and Lola is always running in the film. The colour red is also a feisty and rebellious colour which suits Lola perfectly as we see that she will do anything to save her love. Red is also the colour of love and this is shown when a red filter is used while Lola and Manni are in bed together talking. The colour red is essential to the film as it highlights many qualities of Lola.

A fourth technique that director Tom Tykwer uses to make Lola memorable is the film quality. In the film we see high definition film and low definition film. The high definition film has a high resolution, sharp contrast, clear cut images and bright vibrant colours. While Lola is on screen we only see the use of high definition film, this is because she is the main character and it shows that she is different to everyone else. When the low definition film is used we see that the colours are very pasty and dull, this also makes Lola stand out. The only time when high definition film is used without Lola is when the camera is on Manni, this is because of the love Lola and Manni have for each other. The quality of the film in Run Lola Run shows the difference between the plain and boring and the ones you will remember who think on the spot and are unpredictable.

Tom Tykwer has used these four techniques brilliantly to show how important and different Lola is. As a result of these four techniques Lola is a very memorable character in the film Run Lola Run.
